Melanotan II Research for Sexual Dysfunction

An evidence-based overview of research examining Melanotan II in the context of sexual dysfunction. This page synthesizes findings from peer-reviewed literature.

Research Summary

Melanotan II produces erectile effects as a side effect of its melanocortin receptor activity. This led to the development of PT-141 (bremelanotide), a derivative specifically targeting sexual function. The sexual effects are mediated through melanocortin-4 receptors in the brain affecting sexual motivation and arousal. These effects were unexpected findings during tanning research. Melanotan II is not approved for sexual dysfunction. PT-141, the selective derivative, received FDA approval for female HSDD but not male ED.
